2011 -- A Year in Brief

Quite the year!  Yet again, it's time to look back and reflect on how well the previous year turned out.  Kind of a quiet year, but this is a list of the things I think were important that happened with me during the year.  Only "kind of, but not really at all" in chronological order.

  • Got my 2nd raise at work, to a value that I can actually remember.
  • Stopped having to pay mortgage insurance on my house.
  • Watched Sucker Punch, Rango, X-Men: First Class, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 2, and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in theaters.
  • Figured if I'm going to make fun of Pride and Prejudice I'd better read it.  ... Decided it's not nearly as bad as The Scarlet Letter.  Actually, pretty good for its genre.
  • Caught the garter for the first time at a wedding reception.
  • Went on a lot of great dates this year.
  • Cousin got married.
  • Sister got married.
  • Bought an HD Camcorder.
  • Unimpressed with the Windows 7 Movie Maker, I bought Adobe After Effects for myself.
  • Underwhelmed by the speed of my computer, I bought a new processor, motherboard, and memory.  After much effort, I was able to upgrade to a computer that's fast enough to process my HD video.
  • 10-year High School Reunion.  It was good to see you after all this time!  It's funny to see how similar we are to what we were like.  Just overall less hair, and more children.
  • My family went to the Grand Canyon for the first time.
  • Singles Ward went to Bear Lake for the third year in a row.  Okay, I know-- I'm in a different ward now.
  • Singles Stakes successfully organized along the Wasatch front.
  • For the first time since moving out of Layton, we had a Singles dance!
  • Played a lot of good Ultimate Frisbee this summer.
  • Since they finished the D&RG trail, I rode my bike to the end of it.  Turns out it connects with the Legacy Parkway trail.
  • Was witness to friend's giant $3,000 fireworks display explode midair one fine Pioneer Day.
  • Got back in the habit of writing in my Journal.
  • Started actually keeping my commitment to myself to pray twice a day and read the scriptures at least once a day.
  • Since my mission, I wanted to keep up my gospel study.  That never went well at all.  Beginning this year, I finally made good on my goal to read at least the last conference Ensign before the next conference.
  • Also finally started going to the Temple every month.  Not always easy, but always worth it.-- As always, still stuff I'd like to do, but I definitely feel closer to the spirit.
  • Started working out twice a week.
  • Some coworkers moved to different groups, and we got new guys from other projects.
  • Started a new project at work.
  • Dad fell ill and is suffering from a severely weakened heart.
  • Started working out up to four times a week.

TED Talks

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is an annual conference where geniuses  get together and talk about their field of expertise.  They are usually about 20  minutes each, and are filled with awesome.  I learn something new  with each one.  You can go to http://www.ted.com/talks and explore what they offer yourself, but here I wanted to make a list of some that I've seen over the years that I really enjoyed:

How we affect / are affected by our Social Network

Creativity vs. Content providers

Creativity vs. Education system

Different types of Love (as chemicals)

Freakonomics (Specifically economics of an inner-city gang)

Super Math skills

Girl plays and explains a weird musical instrument
