2017 -- A Year in Brief

Another year over, another year older. Maybe wiser? Well... let’s see what happened this year.

  • We had switched to a contribution-based pay system, and I got my first raise under that, which I was happy about.
  • At work, we took an official Myers-Briggs personality test (ENTP) and it was pretty fun, and I felt like it explained some things about me.
  • When I backed into a perpendicular parking space, I said, “huh... I don’t think I’ve ever done that before.”
  • I got 7 new board games and 3 new expansions this year!
  • Some things happened and people said some stuff and I had some self-confidence problems throughout the year. I tried to keep a good attitude though, so hopefully I hid my shyness and nervousness pretty well.
  • And on the positive side, despite my frustration about making new friends, I ended up meeting some new people and becoming a bit closer with new and old friends after all. Thanks for cheering me up!
  • Thank you to those who tried setting me up on dates with women you know, sorry things didn’t work out.
  • I backpacked into the Uintas again this year.
  • I backpacked into Grand Staircase Escalante for the first time this year.
  • I went on a day hike into the Uintas to a place I hadn’t been before.
  • Gen II and III game out for Pokémon Go, and I walked the streets a ton.
  • Also in that game, I was able to get 10 gyms in the old gym system. (I like the new gyms a lot better.) I have been able to catch all the legendary Pokémon so far, including Mewtwo.
  • A coworker started playing, too, and that makes things fun.
  • I was able to transfer my 401-K out of my old work finally.
  • Someone realized to turn the “on” switch for the air in the office so we don’t quite melt in the summer.
  • I went to Bear Lake with the Single Adult ward.
  • I went to Sage Hen Reservoir in Idaho with my Dad and sister, where we saw a total eclipse for the first time.
  • I played Ultimate Frisbee with the ward, which I hadn’t done since five years ago with the Clearfield YSA.
  • A fire in nearby Weber Canyon was too far to worry about burning my stuff, but was close enough to worry about the smoke in my lungs.
  • Besides the Book of Mormon, I read: Machine of Death, The Goal, Ender’s Game, Ender’s Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets, Shadow of the Giant, Shadows in Flight, and Mob Psycho 100.
  • Movies I saw in theaters this year: Star Wars: Rogue One, Beauty and the Beast, Your Name, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, Cars 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
  • I played over 352 games this year. Ten most played that I kept track of:
    • 7 Wonders (41 times)
    • My First Carcassonne (17 times)
    • Terraforming Mars (15 times)
    • Seafall (15 times)
    • Splendor (14 times)
    • Betrayal at House on the Hill (11 times)
    • Dead of Winter (8 times)
    • Catan (8 times)
    • Dominion (8 times)
    • Telestrations (8 times)
  • I got a nice box to store Catan and all its expansions in, and I’m really happy about that!

That about covers everything. I feel like I was really able to focus on some good hobbies of mine-- camping, reading, frisbee, and board games. I think next year I need to focus on making goals relating to my spirituality. I feel like I’ve been neglecting some of that, and that getting closer to the spirit can help me out with some of the emotional troubles I’ve been having recently.

Thanks for being my friend, and for the help you’ve given me. As always, here’s hoping that 2018 will be better than the last!
