Time Travel Movies

Time travel is my favorite plot device.  I remember watching Doctor Who as a kid, and Back to the Future is my favorite movie.  I’m always imagining what it would be like to travel through time.  Anyway, I thought I would make a list of all the movies that I have seen that involve time travel, even if pretty minor.  So here we go!

  • 1968 - Planet of the Apes - not really what I think of as a time travel movie, but travel to the future is technically time travel, so it’s on the list.
  • 1970 - Scrooge - of the adaptations of A Christmas Carol I’ve seen, this is my least favorite, but it did give us the song “Thank you very much” so there’s that.
  • 1978 - Superman - A minor plot device, but it’s there!
  • 1981 - Time Bandits - Probably the first movie that one would actually consider “a time travel movie.”
  • 1982 - The Flight of Dragons - The protagonist is described as going back in time, instead of the somewhat more sensible “brought to a fantasy world.”
  • 1983 - Mickey’s Christmas Carol - Despite being only 26 minutes long, it calls itself a “film” not like a TV special or whatever, so we’ll count it.
  • 1984 - The Terminator - I saw an edited version on TV, fantastic movie.
  • 1984 - A Christmas Carol - Of all the adaptations of A Christmas Carol, this one is my favorite.
  • 1985 - Back to the Future - Best movie ever!
  • 1985 - My Science Project - I almost forgot this movie was a thing.
  • 1986 - Flight of the Navigator - When I was a kid, I didn’t realize that this was a time travel movie.  Just weird, slightly disturbing aliens and stuff.  The movie made a ton more sense when I got slightly older and realized the whole point of the movie.
  • 1986 - Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home - Best Star Trek movie!
  • 1989 - Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure - “Be excellent to each other!”
  • 1989 - Back to the Future II - Not as good in my opinion as the first and last of the trilogy.
  • 1990 - Back to the Future III - Sometimes I can’t decide whether this or the first is the best of the trilogy.
  • 1991 - Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey
  • 1992 - Split Infinity - This movie was filmed in Layton!
  • 1992 - The Muppet Christmas Carol - Funniest adaptation of A Christmas Carol.
  • 1993 - Groundhog Day - A different type of time travel, but a great concept!
  • 1994 - Star Trek Generations - Okay, I might be running out of things to say on each of these.
  • 1995 - The Langoliers - A completely different take on how time itself works.
  • 1996 - Doctor Who - A made-for-TV movie, an oasis during the 16 years Doctor Who was off the air.
  • 1996 - Star Trek: First Contact - 2nd best Star Trek movie.  Probably mostly because time travel.
  • 1998 - Lost in Space - Original TV series was better.
  • 1999 - Galaxy Quest - Fantastic Star Trek parody.
  • 2001 - Pokémon 4Ever
  • 2002 - The Time Machine
  • 2002 - Minority Report
  • 2004 - Primer - Originally shown at Sundance, this low-budget film is probably the most accurate description of what it would be like if engineers accidentally created a time machine in their garage.
  • 2004 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - One theory of time travel is that you can affect the past, but you cannot change the past.  Harry Potter displays that really well.
  • 2005 - Zathura: A Space Adventure - Sci-Fi Jumanji.
  • 2006 - The Lake House - Chick flicks are better when there’s a space-time anomaly in the mailbox.
  • 2006 - Déjà Vu - Okay, now I’ve really run out of things to say
  • 2007 - Meet the Robinsons
  • 2008 - Stargate: Continuum
  • 2009 - Star Trek
  • 2009 - Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
  • 2010 - Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
  • 2011 - Source Code
  • 2012 - Men in Black 3
  • 2013 - Steins;Gate: The Movie - Load Region of Déjà Vu
  • 2013 - Free Birds
  • 2014 - X-Men: Days of Future’s Past
  • 2014 - Edge of Tomorrow
  • 2014 - Interstellar
  • 2015 - Terminator Genisys
  • 2016 - Doctor Strange
  • 2016 - Arrival
  • 2019 - Avengers: Endgame
  • 2020 - Time Loop

I’m aware of other movies I need to see, but I keep thinking there are movies that I have seen that I forgot to count.  I’ll edit this note if I can think of others, but 47 movies, that’s a big list!
